Intervista a Maria Angela Capello
Ciao cara, presentati: chi sei? Qual è il tuo lavoro?
Mi chiamo Maria Angela Capello e sono un’italiana nata in Venezuela che vive in Kuwait.
Laureata in Fisica all’Università Simon Bolivar in Venezuela, ho poi conseguito il Master in Geofisica presso la Colorado School of Mines, (USA).
Ho sviluppato la mia carriera professionale nel settore energetico, nel settore petrolifero e del gas iniziando come supervisore degli equipaggi sismici nelle giungle del Venezuela.
Ho lavorato in compagnie petrolifere nazionali, società di servizi internazionali e società di consulenza in America Latina, Stati Uniti e Medio Oriente. Oggi sono consulente esecutivo della Kuwait Oil Company.
Alcuni dei miei titoli di lavoro che ho ricoperto sono Oil Asset Manager, Regional Operations Manager, Technology Leader, Executive Director, Subsurface Practice Manager e Executive Advisor.
Ho scritto un libro, “Learned in the Trenches – Insights on Leadership and Resilience”, pubblicato da Springer nel 2018.
Il mio lavoro di volontariato per l’International Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) e la Society of Exploration Geophysicists mi ha fornito molte soddisfazioni e una meravigliosa rete.
Sono stata riconosciuta come membro onorario SPE, un incarico importante considerato che parliamo di una società di 167.000 membri in tutto il mondo.
Sono membro a vita e direttore del SEG. Ho girato il mondo come Distinguished Lecturer, plasmando alcuni dei miei più recenti successi.
Ma la mia definizione preferita è che sono un’elica dei cambiamenti di fase, una sostenitrice della resilienza e una promotrice dell’empowerment delle donne.
Sono anche una pianista e una specialista della musica per tastiera del periodo barocco.
Sono un fan di J. S. Bach, devota di Domenico Scarlatti e super appassionata di Antoni Soler.
Ho una famiglia adorabile, composta da mio marito Herminio e dalle nostre due figlie, Alessandra e Claudia, che sono stati fondamentali per il mio lavoro e per la mia carriera e le mie montagne russe.
Da quanti anni lavori nel mondo OIL & gas?
Perbacco! 34 anni, 11 mesi e 19 giorni!!! Presto, a marzo, celebrerò il mio 35° anniversario di lavoro.
Quanto è cambiato questo mondo?
Direi che ci sono due grandi cambiamenti: l’automazione digitale di tutti i processi, dall’esplorazione, alla produzione, al marketing, e la graduale enfasi sulla sicurezza per i dipendenti, le operazioni, l’ambiente.
Tu giri il mondo e qual è l’impressione che gli altri hanno di questo ambiente?
Di recente c’è stato un cambiamento nella percezione del settore petrolifero e del gas, poiché le persone rifiutano progressivamente l’industria petrolifera e del gas, fuorviata dalla mancanza di informazioni, secondo me.
Le campagne per la conservazione dell’ambiente hanno incolpato le O&G per le principali problematiche relative ai cambiamenti climatici, ma la realtà è che, a livello globale, la qualità della vita è aumentata ovunque, grazie alla disponibilità di energia migliore, più economica ed efficiente. Fornita da oil & gas di terra.
È necessario di più e l’industria nel suo insieme, specialmente in Europa, sta migrando verso una nuova fase in cui la riduzione del netto delle emissioni di carbonio è una priorità. La legislazione sarà fondamentale per unificare gli sforzi in tutti i settori energetici. Il carbone, ad esempio, sta ancora ricevendo prestiti da organizzazioni finanziarie globali, in paesi con scarsi o nessun controllo ambientale, e poche persone sono consapevoli del fatto che bruciare carbone per produrre elettricità produce emissioni di GHG molto più elevate di petrolio e gas. Dobbiamo fare un lavoro migliore nel comunicare come O&G sostenga una migliore qualità della vita per tutti.
Hai scritto un libro sulla leadership, sei spesso circondata da uomini e donne di gran potere.
Il leader che più ti ha colpito?
Ho incontrato leader fantastici in molti campi. Davvero molti!!! Voglio citare:
- Nader Sultan, in Kuwait, l’uomo che ha salvato KPC durante l’invasione ed è stato la chiave per la ripresa dell’economia e del futuro dell’industria petrolifera del Kuwait, con la sua personalità magnetica e la sua apertura.
- Lorenzo Mendoza, CEO di Empresas Polar in Venezuela, un impero di produzione e distribuzione di alimenti che comprende 5 paesi, che mi ha influenzato con la sua umiltà e il suo stile diretto.
- Il Dr. Mike Batzle, un geofisico riverito che è stato il mio mentore per decenni e che ha dimostrato con l’esempio come essere uno sponsor.
- Vincenzo Paglione, un regista di INtevep, il cervello dell’ “Apertura” in Venezuela, con la sua umiltà.
- Il Dr.Giuseppe Giannetto, Rettore di UCV, coraggioso come pochi.
- La dott.ssa Eve Sprunt e la dott.ssa Magaly Campos che hanno avuto un grande impatto su di me.
Recentemente tu stessa hai vinto un premio SPE come membro onorario per la leadership.
Qual è la qualità più importante per essere un buon leader?
Leader si nasce o si può diventare?
Con gli anni e le mie esperienze, ho capito che leader si nasce.
Per me la qualità più importante in un leader è la vision. E poi l’integrità.
Con le Amiche di fuso avevamo deciso di celebrare ogni mese una donna che ci ispira e motiva e avevamo già concordato che tu saresti stata una delle nostre protagoniste. Poi è arrivato un altro grande riconoscimento per te e sei stata nominata per entrare nell’iniziativa delle “DONNE in Resource Management” della Commissione economica per l’Europa delle Nazioni Unite. Ci racconti meglio questa avventura?
Sì, sono stata contattata dall’UNECE per essere il co-presidente della nuova iniziativa “Women in Resource Management”, intesa a promuovere le donne in questo importante settore dell’economia. Ciò persegue l’SDG (Sustainability Development Goals) in cui l’obiettivo numero 5 è “Raggiungere l’uguaglianza di genere”.
Siamo entusiasti di questo obiettivo impegnativo e affronteremo questioni relative alle donne nell’energia, nel non convenzionale, nell’estrazione mineraria, nel petrolio e nel gas, con l’obiettivo di promuoverne l’autonomia, la partecipazione e la pertinenza. E ovviamente anche la loro leadership!
Cosa speri di trasferire alle nuove generazioni soprattutto di donne?
Di non avere barriere.
Abbiamo bisogno di tutte le menti e le mani disponibili per avere un futuro migliore. La metà dell’umanità è donna e costituisce quindi la metà delle forze disponibili, ricordate che può essere la metà del futuro migliore che tutti meritiamo.

Hello dear, introduce yourself: who are you? What is your job?
My name is Maria Angela Capello, and I am an Italian born in Venezuela who lives in Kuwait.
I graduated in Physics from the Simon Bolivar University, Venezuela, and then, I earned my Master in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines, (USA).
I developed my professional career in the energy sector, in the oil and gas segment. Started as a supervisor of seismic crews in the jungles of Venezuela. I progressed with many happy turns a career journey that has taken me to assume very interesting assignments and challenges, and today I am an executive consultant in Kuwait Oil Company. I have worked in National Oil Companies, International Service Companies, and Consulting firms in Latin-America, USA and the Middle East. Some of my jobs titles I have held are Oil Asset Manager, Regional Operations Manager, Technology Leader, Executive Director, Subsurface Practice Manager, and Executive Advisor.
I am an author of the book “Learned in the Trenches – Insights on Leadership and Resilience”, published by Springer in 2018.
My volunteer work for the International Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists have provided me many satisfactions and a wonderful network. I have been recognized as SPE Honorary Member, the top indiviaul award of this society of 167,000 members worldwide. I am a Lifetime Member and Director of the SEG. I have toured the world as Distinguished Lecturer, shaping several of my most cherished recent accomplishments.
But my preferred definition is that I am a propeller of step-changes, an advocate of Resilience and a promoter of women empowerment. Also a pianist! I am a specialist in the baroque period keyboard music. I am a fan of J. S. Bach, a devotee of Domenico Scarlatti and the top enthusiast of Antoni Soler.
I have a lovely family, composed by my husband Herminio, and our two daughters, Alessandra and Claudia, who have balanced with me work and life in many places and circumstances, and whose support is key for my career and life roller coaster.
How many years have you been working in the OIL & gas world?
Gosh! 34 years, 11 months and 19 days!!! Soon, in March, I will be celebrating my 35 year work anniversary.
How much and in what has it changed?
I would say there are two major changes: The digital automation of all processes, from exploration, to production, to marketing, AND the gradual emphasis on Safety for the employees, the operations, the environment.
You travel the world, what is the impression that others have of this environment?
Recently , there is a change in the perception of the oil and gas sector, as people incrementally are rejecting the oil and gas industry, misled by lack of information, in my opinion. The campaigns for preservation of the environment have blamed on O&G the major issues pertinent to climate change, but the reality is that globally, the quality of life has incremented everywhere, due to the availability of better and cheaper more efficient energy. More is needed, and the industry as a whole, especially in Europe, is migrating to a new phase where the Net-Zeroing the carbon emissions is a priority. Legislation will be key to unify efforts in all energy sectors. Coal, for example, is still receiving loans from Global financial organizations, in countries with scarce or no environmental controls, and few people are aware that burning coal to produce electricity produces far more GHG emissions than oil and gas. We need to do a better job at communicating how O&G sustain a better quality of life for all.
You have written a book on leadership, you are often surrounded by men and women of great power.
The leader who most impressed you?
I have met awesome leaders in many fields. I want to cite Nader Sultan, in Kuwait, the man who rescued KPC during the invasion, and was key for the recovery of the economy and future of the oil industry of Kuwait, and with his magnetic personality, and openness. Lorenzo Mendoza, the CEO of Empresas Polar in Venezuela, an empire of food production and distribution that encompasses 5 countries, impacted me with his humbleness and direct style. Dr. Mike Batzle, a revered geophysicist who was my mentor for decades and who led by example how to be a sponsor. Vincenzo Paglione, a Director if INtevep, the brain of the “Apertura” in Venezuela, with his humbleness. Many, many !!! Dr.Giuseppe Giannetto, Rector of UCV, bold aas few. Dr. Eve Sprunt and Dr. Magaly Campos had a great impact in me.
You recently won an honorary SPE membership award.
What is the most important quality to be a good leader?
Are leaders born or made?
For me the most important quality in a leader is VISION. And then, INTEGRITY.
With my Amiche di Fuso we decided to celebrate a woman who inspires and motivates us every month and we had already agreed that you would be one of our protagonists. Then another great recognition came for you and you were nominated to enter in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s “WOMEN in Resource Management”. Can you tell us more about this adventure?
Yes, I was contacted by the UNECE to be the Co-Chair for the new Women in Resource Management Initiative, intended to promote women in this important sector of the economy. This pursues the SDG (Sustainability Development Goas) number 5 “Reach Gender Equality”.
We are thrilled with this challenging goal, and we will address issues pertinent to women in Energy, in Non-conventional, in mining, in oil and gas, aiming to promte their self-empowerment, participation and relevance. And of course, also their leadership!
What do you hope to pass on to future generations, especially women?
To see NO BARRIERS.
We need all the brains and hands to push for a better future. Half of the humanity is only half of the effort, may be half of the better future we all deserve.
Do you have a slogan??
No, but I like to think that happiness lies in the journey, not in reaching the goal!
